Halloween can be scary for kids with an imagination

My teenage daughter, tells me I don’t know how to blog, she tells me it’s supposed to be a vehicles for feelings and expression. She would give me an example, but doesn’t want me to see hers. So I will give it a try. Here is something that irks me.

My 5 yr old wants nothing to do with Halloween. It’s too scary. He doesn’t like seeing the commercials on TV that intrudes our living room during a kids TV show. He doesn’t like the scary bags given out at the fast food restaurants to promote attractions at theme parks, he doesn’t like the scary toys that are given out with a kids meal. There are books and movies geared towards kids with blood and death and fear. Who likes this stuff? Not kids like mine with an incredible imagination. Last Halloween we went knocking on doors in a nice well lit neighborhood. People were out on cul-de-sacs enjoying hot cider and treats. My son was very happy going from house to house, being greeted by really nice neighbors who gave him treats. Then we came to a house where someone peeked out the window wearing a scary mask. That was the end of our fun. This year if we go out at all we’ll go to the trunk or treat at the church.
